Lisa, what breathing easy said is very true, like yourself, i had an emergency trach, in my early 20's I was over weight and lost over 100 lbs but found, I felt better, I was almost forced into another sleep study by my doctor and husband by the way, that i met and married after, i was trached, so there are a lot of good things still out there. I am still trached, had talked to my doctor about a stoma button, so i could cap it off and have both hands free because i was expecting a baby, that I lost the second one so I was sure, I would have this one and need both hands, however, things working out the way they did, I decided to stay with the same trach I have had for year a Jackson #8 and I am open 24/7 and my husband has said, I can out talk him anyday. I think it takes anyone with a "regular" trach time to be able to talk because most doctors will start out with a tube in emergencys that are very larg and don't allow enough air around them to talk because your body needs it so bad.. In time he will probably change your trach size, and tell you to cap in the day, good luck at that. lol I don't think I have ever read a post on here that anyone with a regular trach size 6 8 or what ever could cap, most all I have read are open 24/7 and finger occlued to talk and that gets to be old hat. the reason being, is speaking only from other post and myself, when my trach is not open I do not get enough air because of the space it takes up in my treacha, but with it open I breath very well. For hair washing and shower, I use a stoma cover it works very well, get one. you well in a short time get to where you do not need all those dressings, oh boy do i remember those, ugly!!!!!! and get rid of that trach holder, when you no longer need the dressings. you can buy ribbon, that is very pretty, chains, ect. My wonderful hubby just had a friend of his make ne a 14k gold chain for mine. It really does get better.
