Posted by Recent UPPP on October 02, 2001 at 11:39:46:I had a tonsillectomy and UPPP on September 14 in Austin, TX. The procedure took a little over an hour and I stayed overnight in the hospital. I didn't have a problem with the generic Loritab (liquid codeine/Tylenol) as long as I sipped it. I did ask for some additional pain medication as the pain came back well before my next dose. I talked the nurse into giving me some Demerol, which definitely helped.
After I got home, I took the maximum amount of the generic Loritab every 4 hours (4,8 and 12 o'clock) for about 7 days. I also took a prescription elixir, dubbed Pink Magic, which consisted of lidocane, generic benedryl, and an antacid. I took this every 2 hours and it helped to numb the pain in between doses of generic Loritab. I was able to eat and drink smoothies, chicken and stars soup, jello, applesauce, apple juice, instant oatmeal, etc. The pain subsided noticeably after the 6th day and I was able to reduce the dosages of the pain medications. I quit taking them entirely after 9 days. I did have a case of severe constipation on the sixth day; I should have been using a stool softener. I was able to resume eating regular food around the 12th day (carefully of course!). I was able to start working after 10 days. My sleep has improved and my wife says I'm not snoring any more!
In summary, this procedure seems to have worked for me; your results may be different. The pain can be managed and I was never really uncomfortable. The back of my throat feels a little different but I am getting used to it fairly quickly. The surgery was not fun, but the recovery time passed quickly.
Bottom line: If I had to do it all over again, based on the way I feel today, I definitely would do it. Thanks to all on this board who shared their experiences.Pete
