Tonsillectomy and UPPP Recovery Day 7

Posted by Zach on October 03, 2001 at 18:18:44:

It's been a full week now since the surgery. I can look back in my throat and see the areas where my tonsils used to be. The area is white and is starting to fill in. There is also a lot less saliva than there was even several days ago. There is no swelling and everything looks pink and appears to be healing fine. My swallowing seems smooth and unhitched, except for first thing in the morning.

I went out today and got some Boston Market mashed potatoes, gravy and chicken noodle soup broth. (Is the creamed spinach OK to eat? It looked good and soft.) Even though it wasn't meat, it was nice to have something that at least reminded me of meat. If mashed potatoes and gravy don't do it, nothing will!

I ask if creamed spinach is okay to eat because my mother says I should get some strained spinach and carrot baby food. Both produce iron, which produce blood, and that's what I need now to build back up and stop feeling so weak. And truth to be told, I'd rather have creamed spinach from Boston Market than strained baby food of any kind.

After working for a few hours yesterday, I decided not to go in today because my head still aches a little. It was hard to concentrate and look at the computer monitor. Someone at my job mentioned that it takes general anesthesia about 5-7 days to totally rid itself from your system. I'm not sure if that explains the dull but constant headache I still get; it's usually present upon waking and stays with me throughout the day. It doesn't stop me from driving around town to run errands. More than anything, it makes me feel irritable.

I don't feel like the headache comes from the pain pills because I take them sparingly now. I still dissolve the Percocet 7.5 in hot water and mix it with cool water before drinking it down. I'm almost finished my supply of Cephalexin, which is suspended in Penicillin. I take it to make sure I don't come down with an infection. I'll be glad when I finished with that tomorrow. I haven't had Penicillin since childhood and it tastes awful.

On a positive note, I do feel like I'm reaching a deeper level of sleep. That's evidenced alone by the length of the dreams I've been having. Normally, my dreams seems to occur right before I awake and are short. Over the past two nights my dreams seem like movies -- very long, episodic and extremely vivid. I think this is a good thing.

I've had two sleep tests -- one with CPAP and one without. During both tests, I was not able to achieve REM levels 3 and 4, only 1 and 2. I'm sure my increased dreaming means that I'm now reaching a deeper level of REM sleep. I can't wait for my next sleep study in three weeks to verify any improvements. I would love to not have to wear the CPAP machine. I still use it as a follow up to my surgery to keep my airway open and working correctly while I'm asleep -- doctor's orders.

Well, I'm off for a nap now. I'll get up later and head to Walgreen's to get some Colace, a stool softener, and some liquid Centrum to get more vitamins and minerals into me.

Ah, that reminds me: I had my first bowel movement since the surgery yesterday, after getting home from work. It was a little hard to pass, but wasn't too bad. It's a little odd not going to the bathroom for so long, but one of the side effects of Percoset is that it's constipating. Also, not having a diet for close to a week will do it, too.

More than anything else, I'm eager to start eating solid food again. From the way things feel, I don't think I'm too far away.
