Today is Sunday. My surgery was on Wednesday afternoon; it was fit into the schedule a few weeks ago. The background is that I had MMA / GA and some neck surgery here April 2nd. Although there was some improvement, I found that my symptoms remained very debilitating - you know the list: exhaustion, sleepiness, microsleeps when driving, memory loss, night sweats. A follow up sleep study, again at Stanford, early in August, showed that moderate sleep apnea was still present. The number I remember off the top of my head is an RDI of 19. The recommendation from the sleep clinic was to discuss further treatment with the surgeons. I spoke with three different surgeons, and once again chose the group at Stanford. There were some personal reasons - I was a post-doc at Stanford for years, and my son is currently at Berkeley and able to help me. Also, I trust the hospital and staff. Remember, the real job of the anesthesthesiologist is not to put us to sleep, but to make sure we wake up. Above all, I believe that the surgical group, and all they have trained, are without question the best able to obtain a good result. My surgeon this time was Dr. Li, and I have been very pleased with his care. The procedures were uvula surgery - make a flap; hyoid bone relocation; and RF of the base of the tongue. My tonsils were taken out years ago. Scar tissue remains at the old tonsil site, but we did not want to do any work there. All went well, and because there was no tonsillectomy, the pain is more bearable. I am recovering in a motel in Palo Alto. Diet is Ensure, plus some yogurt, and liquids. Lortab for pain - I dilute it before swallowing - and antibiotic (a cephalosporin). There is considerable swelling, and I am using the CPAP religiously. Yesterday, with some effort, I walked 2 miles, but I am avoiding any strenuous exercise for the moment. It sure was nice to get here and drink a good cup of coffee! I feel very lucky, and part is that such effective and sensitive care is available. My greatest hope is that in a couple of months I will know that the nightmare is over, and I will start to feel like a human being again. Hope everyone is well, including whoever had surgery before me on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd. Will of course appreciate any advice. Regards to all,
Tom
