My advice is to get yourself into the best physical condition you can. I, though great
self discipline, managed to get to the point I was
swimming a mile 3-4 times a week. Don't ever tell
me about lacking self dicipline being a cause for
my obesity, having managed this since July 1.

I know I'm off scale (the most longest surgery
Dr. Li's performed), but you should not presume
you will be luckier than I've been (though you
probably will be). 7 1/4 hours on the operating
tape is a *VERY* long time; even the original
estimate Dr. Li had of 5 1/2 hours for me would have been long surgery. I guess I missed a
trach primarily by being in decent shape.

So do what you can to get in shape. And try to
get as much rest as you can the last few days before surgery; I wish I'd come out here a day
earlier and had some naps the weekend before we
came.

And the Stanford medical center folks are extremely good, particularly in the ICU, where
both my wife and I found them amazingly good and
competant. In the ICU they seemed able to
anticipate my every need: in the general ward, they always responsed when asked pretty quickly.
(Don't be shy to ask).
