Re: Tonsillectomy and UPPP Recovery Day 12

Posted by Zach on October 08, 2001 at 22:29:32:

Hey, everybody. I had my post-op checkup with the doctor today. The visit was short and sweet. Everything is healing fine. He removed one stitch, but left the rest in.

He mentioned that he may, in the future, do a little bit of shaving to the tissue left over from the UPPP tuck, but that's it. (For those who have had the UPPP done, doesn't it feel funny not to be able to simulate/fake snoring? It's a weird feeling. But that's the way it works: no uvula, no snoring.)

I also returned to work today, full of energy and vigor.

One thing is for sure: I'm dreaming incredibly long dreams now. Longer than I ever have before. The doc and I both assume it's because I'm reaching a deeper level of sleep. (Again, in two sleep studies, I was never able to reach REM 3 or 4, where the body gets its most significant rest.)

He suggested that I stay on CPAP for a while however, while things are still healing. He's a big advocate on staying on till the healing process is complete. Or at least until I have my first post-op sleep test, which I can't wait to take.

The doc suggested that I stay on my soft diet, which so far has been expanded to include lo mein dishes from Chinese restaraunts.

Today also marks the first day I've eaten two meals in one day since the surgery. I have been eating only one solid food meal a day since day 6; everything else is gatorade, applesauce and Ensure. Today I had chicken lo mein for lunch and about 10 pieces of sushi for dinner. Sushi is a great soft diet dish for those of us who have had the surgery. Everything is extremely soft and chewy -- and tasty, but expensive! But it's all well worth it. The only thing I would caution is eating wasabi. I love it, but didn't touch the stuff this time around. The ginger is spicy enough for now.

I even drank a little aloe vera juice today and found that it tasted funny and stung a little around the area of my stitches.

I see the doc again in 30 days.

Hoping to get off CPAP,
Zach
