Hey Buck,

Try mashed potatoes around Day 7 or 8 if you're unsure. The important thing is to have something that's *smooth*. Mashed potatoes present no threat to your now tender throat.

Eat the potatoes with chicken broth to soften them up by watering them down. Potatoes are good because they're full of carbs, which give you energy. Not eating affects your bowels (I didn't have my first BM till Day 7 or 8) and your energy level (I felt weak at times from not getting all the vitamins I normally get).

It's funny to read about your encounter with baby food. My mother actually suggested that I get spinach baby food to get some iron in my system. I held out for creamed spinach at Boston Market instead.

Italian Ices are great, aren't they. I still have one left over in the fridge, as well as lots of Jell-O. Even on a normal diet, I rarely eat the stuff.

Just don't go back to work to early like I did (Day 6). I was horrible and couldn't concentrate. I was still on medication at the time, too, though I didn't take pain meds at work. I was still sleepy too. Give your body as much rest as it needs. If you're up playing video games (my favorite pasttime during the first week) and you suddenly feel tired don't push it. Stop the video game and go lie down and sleep.

Regarding the stitches, my doctor told me he used a certain kind that "would take forever to work themselves free." When I go back for another checkup in a month, he'll most likely have to remove them by cutting them out. After six weeks, the healing should be pretty complete by then, so there shouldn't be any worries. Ask your doctor what type of stitches you have. He may have used the type that actually dissolve, but something tells me he used a tougher material like my doctor. If you had the UPPP tuck, it's imporatant that the uvula heal itself to your palate. If the stitches were weak the uvula could come loose and heal funny, which wouldn't look good cosmetically. You would probably complain of the funny feeling you had of it still partially hanging down. As it is, the muscle of even a tucked uvula still works and you can still see it moved while attached to your palate.

Day 5 and Day is about the time where the pain really starts subsiding. Try taking less pain meds -- it's possible to beceome addicted -- and see how much pain is actually present and if it's bearable. Being on pain meds all day is no good because you can't really function; they make you tired.

Keep improving, bud.
Zach
