Jan in Jersey,

I had my tonsillectomy & UPPP surgeries on December 28, 2001. Four hours after the operation I was able to eat liquids(luke warm broth, slightly cool jello, sherbert if I let it melt first in my mouth, and Vitamin water to drink).

I'm now at day 13 post-op and I don't like anything hot or cold yet. Warm or cool is now OK. The first three days post-op I stayed on liquids like broth, jello, sherbert & Vitamin water. After that I was able to add applesauce, mashed potatoes with gravy and Cambells chicken&stars soup. By day 5 I could add scrambled eggs. Now, at day 13 post-op, I can eat all of the above plus meatloaf, hamburger helper stuff, cheese slices but nothing hard or spicy or hot/cold foods or liquids. I also made sure I took small bites or sips so that swallowing was easier. I did find it irritating to have to get up in the middle of the night to take my pain medications so I had my doctor switch me to a 12-hour pain medication(20mg-40mg Oxycontin) to take during the night while I was trying to sleep. It only lasted about 8-9 hours for me but that was fine since it let me remain asleep longer since I no longer had to get up in the middle of the night to take medications. During the day, I took Roxicet(generic for Percocet) and Hydrocodone(generic for Lortab) for my pain medications. The Hydrocodone seemed to work better than the Roxicet for me during the daytime. If I took Hydrocodone at night, it made me halucinate and move my legs a lot when trying to sleep so I just stuck with the 12-hour Oxycontin.

Good luck with your recovery and keep us posted.
