On November 5 (at age 53), I had a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and UPPP and was kept in the hospital overnight. I was not using a CPAP mask. Both the ENT and my family doctor suggested the operation rather than trying the mask first. As my family doctor put it, "my throat needed to be reamed out" so that I could breathe during exercise.
The doctor gave me Percocet for pain and I was religious about taking it as directed. I even set an alarm to insure I did not take a dose late. Before surgery, I promised myself that I would not let the pain get ahead of me and that I would stay hydrated. If I was not asleep, I was sipping on water. (Initially, swallowing was (as you said), um, interesting.) After about 5 days, I found that extra strength Tylenol relieved the pain as well as Percocet.
Reading up on the UPPP, you will see that the chance of success (curing sleep apnea) is about 30 to 50 percent. I go back for a sleep study mid-Feburary. This will show how successful the operation was and, if needed, I will have another sleep study to determine settings for a CPAP.
So, where am I today? Without a CPAP mask, in my opinion, I sleep like a baby. I go to bed about 10 pm and wake up to an alarm at 5 am. On weekends, I go to bed (usually) at about 10 pm and wake up naturally around 7 a.m. I dream at night (before the operation, I can't remember having a dream for years), I feel rested and mentally alert during the day, I don't get sleepy after lunch, etc, etc, etc. I am very pleased with the results.
I hope you have similiar results. The pain will probably increase over the next few days. Keep up with the pain meds, stay hydrated and keep a good sense of humor. And, if someone is taking care of you, give them a smile and say thanks.
