Hello to Marty and everyone else at the site. My MMA/GA was in April. Marty, I am curious about whether you also had GA. In any case, with MMA jaw bones have been cut, and if you consider that, then the question is not why pain, but why is there not usually a lot more. I believe that what happens is that the trauma of the surgery, and the subsequent swelling, usually cause compression of nerves, at least those that were not accidentally severed. It takes time for nerves to reconnect, and what one often notices is numbness, lack of feeling and/or control, sometimes persisting on one side or another. But, the lack of working nerves leads to lessened perception of pain. You may have more active innervation on the side with pain. Other issues as was said by Zappa and Alamo Joe have to do with pressure. I found that if I slept on my side, much less on my stomach, then the jaw inevitably was pressed or pushed in one direction or another. This regularly disjointed my bite, and this problem can still occur although it is beginning to subside after 8 months. For pain relief, you might discuss with a knowledgeable internist about prescription COX-2 inhibitors, such as Celebrex or Vioxx. They will relieve pain over a period of time, and since they are anti-inflammatory drugs, that might help your overall recovery. These drugs are not pain killers like narcotics, but the decrease of inflammation usually decreases pain. God knows most of us have residual swelling of some sort for some time. Good luck, and I hope you continue to post how things go.
Regards,
Tom
