Posted by frustrated and tired on April 01, 2002 at 00:41:21:I think I have been battling apnea since childhood, but was never tested and diagnosed until 5 years ago at age 33. I have tried CPAP, BiPap, and AutoPap with a continuing series of masks, humifiers, etc. I barely sleep - it's like a hellish twilight or lightsleep until I finally get fed up after a few hours and set the PAP aside. The I sleep - but, well, you all know how that is - far from restful, just not aware. A look with a scope shows the problem is really deep and related to misshaped cartilage in my trachea, so two docs have said that futher surgery is unlikely to help (had tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy as a child). I am at the end of my rope, and have got to have some help. I can no longer function in the workplace and have lost 3 jobs over this. I have repeatedly asked about a tracheostomy, but my doc says that is just not done anymore, and that the only option is to get used to the PAP. Five years is a long enough trial. I'm done. Does anyone out there know of a doc that will still do a tracheostomy? I've had all I can take, and I want my life back.
