Both. A tracheotomy is the surgery. The end result of the surgery is a tracheostomy. Usually on this forum when you see "trach" in a posting it is usually referring to a tracheostomy tube e.g. Shiley or Jackson. You will also see posts for Montgomery or Hood Stents. All of them are devices that go from the stoma ( hole in neck) through to the trachea (windpipe). The configuration is different for all of them. A tracheostomy is a treatment for OSA--generally used for severe life threatening OSA or as a last option when all other treatments have failed. The tubes are capped off during the day and open at night. The trach tube bypasses the obstruction(s) that cause the OSA. It is a very effective treatment but one that mostt of the medical profession does not like.
