This is called "lucid dreaming" and believe me it is a gift...many people try to develop lucid dreaming skills by meditation and other means. Others just spontaneously develop the ability...if you're in that category congratulations! I have never experienced it myself, though it sounds like a lot of fun...do a search on altavista or yahoo for "lucid dreaming" and I'm sure you'll find a wealth of information.
