sudden wakeing as i'm dropping off, gasping for breath

I've had this problem for a long time and am now terrified to go to sleep. As I'm about to fall asleep, I wake up gasping for breath, heart pounding and feeling like I'm about to vomit. It happens over and over until I finally am able to fall asleep. This has progressed and is happening every night. My doctor has me on an acid reducer called Prilosec and feels that it is sleep apnea induced by acid reflux. The medication hasn't helped. I'm desperate for any info or help
