Hi Brendan,
From my personal experience, I feel that there could be a lot of reasons for this. I ALWAYS feel this way, and in the past have resorted to 3 alarm clocks set 15 minutes apart, and also have had my blasting stereo to come on via a timer to wake me. Didn't work.... I happen to have delayed sleep phase syndrome. In a nutshell, that means that my REM sleep, and my other cycles are out of sync, and I wake at 3:00pm and go to bed at 5:00am, and my body will hear of nothing but this schedule. It is permanent, there are no drugs to help, etc. I have to live with it. I won't get into the depression caused by this disorder, I'll spare you. Usually, people start out sleeping light, then go through heavier (quality) sleep cycles, and as "morning" comes, your sleep should get "lighter", allowing you to wake easiser, and feel refreshed. My cycles are all messed up so I wake very often and my "heaviest" cycles are at the end when they should be "lightest". So my body doesn't want to wake up, except for the schedule above. Even then, it is tough.
Maybe you should talk to your doctor and perhaps get a sleep study done. One night in the lab may answer some of your quesions if your doctor is armed with details of your sleep such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, rapid eye movement, temperature, etc.
Good luck! Keep me posted, I care..
