Papers have been published that state this is probably due to a trauma that may have occurred during childhood. Sometimes a sexual trauma or could be mental trauma.

I do not recall too many treatments. One would be seeking help from a psychologist or psychiatrist who works with this problem.

You should talk to a sleep specialist and see what all the options are.

If it is keeping her from getting enough sleep to function safely then you should sleep separately until you find the help you need.
