I would find another sleep specialist. Lack of REM sleep, by itself, does not cause insomnia or tiredness during the day. Many things can cause low amounts of REM sleep during one nights sleep. Sounds to me like he doesn't know what is going on and decided to just give a stimulant.

If the lack of REM sleep is due to a breathing disorder, sometimes hard to detect, or another medical problem then it should be diagnosed and treated.

Find another sleep doc. May just want to talk to them first. I good doc will realize the previous study and treatment sounds like a dud.
