Attn: Day Sleepers, DSPS ppl Help!

Posted by Charlie on February 09, 2005 at 14:39:26:

I know for sure I have DSPS. I've had it all my life, and mornings for work or school, has always been a drag. Whatever I did, to try my hardest to be a "day person," it NEVER lasts.

But it's wierd, because my body likes to wake up late and sleep late, but doing that makes me depressed. If I sleep after 3am I get depressed. If I wake after 3pm I get depressed. I feel tired and not with it as a day person, but I'm not as depressed. If I don't maintain any control over my sleep or body, I will sleep in all kinds of time frames around the clock, or my sleep will continue advancing around the clock, BUT SKIPS the nighttime sleep frames!! How annoying. I am crazy. If you can think of anything in life being ruined because of sleep, I've been there.

Presently I'm trying to be on a strict schedule to sleep between 7p-11p and wake 4a-8a, and so far, it's lasted 2 days, so we'll see how it goes. I doubt this will last, it will just be like my other billion attempts. People think I'm crazy, wierd, and lazy. But my body drives me INSANE. Sleeping near midnight is EXTREMELY DEADLY for me, as it collossals my DSPS tendencies, so I try hard not to let myslef sleep near the "midnight hour." If I sleep from 2am-12pm, the next day, and the next day, I'll just keep going "later and later," ie sleep and wake up later and later. I have let my body advance all it wanted to I got fed up and said I dont care body, you do what you feel like it. You know what my body did? It got to the point it slept at 11am woke up at 8pm!! It "couldn't" go past the "11am mark." But boy WAS I DEPRESSED. This is when I couldn't take anymore of the depression and forced myself wreckage to do self chronotherapy. I feel like me and my body are two different entities- IT DRIVES ME INSANE. School and work has always been MAJOR DRAG. And I've lost jobs and flunked out of classes before because of this DSPS. And of course forget about the social life on this schedule. I will not work nights because I get depression doing so: knowing everyone else and the world is asleep and finished w/ work while I'm toiling away. Working afternoons doesn't work, my body will just keep advancing until I have to still force myself up at 2pm and rush to work at 3pm. So if I'm gonna go through this, I mine as well go through it in the morning like all those normal people.

I am really curious as I have not found any information on the web yet-- : Has anyone with DSPS been professionally treated before?? Because I am really wondering what the treatment and outcome is for you, if you have seen a
professional.

I've never been to a sleep professional before, but presently do not have insurance, so will have to wait on it.
I have done chronotherapy once before. It wore out my body and puts me into depression, and the results lasts some months, then I went back to DSPS again. I just got done doing self chronotherapy again, just now. So this is my second time doing it. I don't know how long I will be able to keep up this schedule.

Melatonin gives me a headache and makes me feel out of wack so I don't take it.

I didn't see much difference when I was taking Vitamin B12.

Light in the morning helps a little but it's no permanent cure.

I will not take anti depressants because of the stores I hear: no long term solution, side effects, addiction. (but I hear some good stories too.)

So DSPS just sounds like something you have to constantly manage and it's a self help thing?? Because all those solutions sound like what I can do at home without a doctor??

This DSPS is life ruining. Normal people don't think twice about this stuff and other sleep disorders out there.

Sorry for the long post, but thanks for reading.

Thanks,
Charlie
