I don't know much about sleep disorders and I am a new student to psychology so as far as the study of the brain and its functions, I'm a newby to that also. However, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about eight years ago after tons of tests and the elimination of every other possibility.

Part of that disorder involved depression and not sleeping well. Mine started after a fall and a broken arm resulting in some sort of weird nerve damage that spread throughout my body, thus the label of fibromalagia, just because I don't believe they had a clue what was wrong with me.

They told me to take antidepressants and anti-inflamatories, which only made my condition even worse. They said there was nothing they could do and I would have to live with it. Not! I did a lot of praying, asking for guidance. There was no way I was going to accept that answer.

My prayers were answered when I went to the library, did my own research and found books where people had been able to overcome the same symptoms I had. One of the books listed a doctor as an expert in treating these types of disorders and he lived only 30 minutes from my house. He was a DO but specialized in allergy and nutrition and alternative medicine. Within two months on a program he gave me, I felt 75% better, and within a year I was fully recovered and have never experienced the symptoms again.

Part of what he did to design my get-well program was to test me for food allergies and environmental allergies. They were eliminated from my diet and substitutes were assigned to replace them. Then he put together a vitamin/mineral program to follow and eventually an exercise program, along with regular chiropratic care.

There are definately books out there that can guide you but sometimes these types of tests can be very helpful, too. He did not do the usual scratch testing, it was a special series of testing done against just about every known food type by taking a few vials of blood and sending them to a special laboratory that tests by measuring against immunio responses. I think it runs about $300.00 and was worth every penny, although my health insurance paid for it.

Keep searching for an answer, I know there is one out there. I wish I could be of more assistance but know there is a higher power source you can plug into if you haven't had much luck in finding the solution, I would start there first, that is unless you are all ready plugged in. I will include you on my prayer list, just in case.
