Waking with scratches

My boyfriend wakes up some days and there are deep scratches on his face and his arms. He has no nails; we've even tried to duplicate the scratches but it won't work bcs there are no jagged edges. I don't think it's me, and besides, he gets them on days I don't sleep over.
He is a complete insomniac and is troubled by nightmares nearly every night. I'm not sure how that is related or what this could be, but we've been searching for months to no avail. Anyone have any info or leads on this sort of research?
