I think I do the same thing. 29, m, perfect health. I happens right when I'm about to drift off and I think my heart stopped. Of course I jump awake, check my pulse and immediately realize I'm fine. I think it's happened about every night for 2 years.

My best explanation for this is that I've become *aware* or 'conscious of losing consciousness.' The sensation most people happily have as they drift off to sleep triggers a 'fight or flight' response for me.
