This has happened to me a couple of times a year since I was in my teens (55 now). I think it's related to "night terrors" and a lot of people experience it. In a dreamlike state, you feel like you are desperately trying to wake up or call out to someone. But you can't move, you're paralyzed; you feel like you're going to die if you don't break out of this. Then finally you really do jolt yourself awake, and it IS scary. At least you know it happens to other people. I guess if it starts to interfere with your life too much, you should see a doc, but I don't think it does any damage to you otherwise.
