Unfortunately I can't offer you a lot of advice, but I know how he feels.

I go through periods of time where I have horrible nightmares every night/multiple times a night, or when I take a nap. I've tried talking to my regular doctor, my sleep doctor, and my psychiatrist about it, but they've been of little help. Most of the time they say that people need rem sleep and it would be harmful to take it away.

(Meanwhile my sleep study showed I spent over 50% of the night in REM sleep; most people spend 15-20%)

It's not a permanent answer, but I often find that taking an ambien will knock me out hard enough that I don't dream. I don't know if that works for everyone though.
