There is one problem that is very difficult to detect. It is called UARS (upper airway resistance syndrome) and the effects can be as bad as severe OSA. The problem in detecting it is the airflow, SaO2, and effort, measured with typical sensors, continue to look normal. The only clear way to diagnosis it is to use endoesophageal pressure which requires a tube running through your nose and down to your esophagus.

When there are numerous arousal's where it is difficult or impossible to understand whey, UARS is typically the problem. It usually occurs with snoring but snoring does not have to be present.

The treatment is the same as OSA.

The Stanford sleep lab checks for it with all patients using what it called a PES. It is a very small infant feeding tube going through the nose which most people tolerate without a problem.

Sleeping pills can make it worse so be aware.

Having said this, there are a other things that can cause unexplained arousal's like pain during sleep. Not as common but can happen.

Try taking the sleep test on this site. If the results show sleep apnea it is a good chance it is UARS. Unfortunately if it doesn't it does not rule it out.

Best wishes,
Sandman
