You can watch him sleep and looks for signs of a breathing disorder. Snoring, may or may not be present, being there is a strong sign for possible osa, unusual body movements, occasional gasping sounds, sweating, breathing stops frequently for short periods of time, and Sandman's famous sour smell test. One of the complaints with sleep apnea is insomnia so usually sleep apnea needs to be ruled out before looking at the possibility of insomnia.
