Several possibilities. One is sleep paralysis where you wake but you are still in your REM sleep mode where you can't move for a short period of time. Best not to panic, your ability to move will return.

Another possibility is a seizure in the transition from sleep to wake. More likely the first scenario, however, you may want to think about seeing a sleep doc if it happens very often.

Most everyone have had this happen to them atleast once in their life and is nothing to be concerned with. If it happens very often you should talk to a sleep specialist in you area who will have access to your medical records, meds you are on, can look at the anatomy of your airway, etc. Sometimes a breathing disorder can precipitate the event.

Best wishes,
Sandman

I am not a sleep doc, just my opinion.
