Often in the mornings or even throughout the night, I awake with eye pain. It hurts pretty bad when I move the eye or open it. A scratchy sensation like there is sand in my eye. Blinking for a few minutes usually solves it and I go back to sleep to be awakened by it again. Had this for years on and off.

I've always thought this was an effect of having my eye scratched when young, but now I'm wondering if my eyes are not closing completely during sleep and drying out causing corneal erosions. I'm going to check on that with a Dr.

Now I'm wondering if this would explain spontaneous awakenings during REM that aren't associated with breathing events. The pain is certainly great enough to awaken me, and the timing seems to match REM by being more concentrated in the early morning, and at hour and a half intervals during the night.

Anyone heard of a connection like this?
