Posted by screengem on August 09, 2009 at 23:16:28:Well, here I am as usual, dead-tired byut unable to fall asleep because every time I do, my airways close up. It appears to have to do with acid reflux. Why I have hyper-intense acid reflux, I don't know. Sometimes I get so frustrated that I'd like to rip out my stomach and toss it into the trash.
I've been to the ER six times, and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of having an IV jabbed into my arm. I'm sick of having my chest papered over with EKG electrodes which are impossible to remove. I'm sick of lying on a gurney for 5 hours only to be told I'm "fine". Sometimes they give me 10 minutes' worth of albuterol inhalation. Sometimes that helps somewhat. Sometimes the airway spasms don't respond to albuterol. In which case, I'm dead-tired and flat out of luck.
I've been a good boy. I've avoided foods with even the tiniest traces of acids or spices. I blew off a dinner party which featured exotic foods because of this condition. Hell, even my old favorite, spaghetti with marinara sauce is a no-no (tomato sauce is highly acid, and sets my stomach off). I'm on 2 proton pump inhibitors plus homeopathic remedies. All of these things work, except when I'm tired and want to sleep.
I've been kept awake for as long as 48 hours straight by this condition.
In utter frustration, I decided to hit a university hospital 3 hours from here. The doctor who saw me there seems to be somewhat more with-it than the local pulmonologist and gastrologist who are either totally clueless or treat me like I'm schizophrenic. He's certainly more with it than the unqualified hacks who staff local ERs after hours. He's ordered some tests for me. Will they give us a clue as to why my body has turned on me? Who knows? (At least Dr. Kevorkian's patients knew they were going to get results.)
I just want this to be over with so that I can fall asleep more or less normally like I've done up till a few months ago.
