This doesn't sound like a cataplexy or a sleep disorder. My first guess would have been seizures.

The neurologist may be correct with his diagnosis. He should let him know that he
couldn't handle the side effects from the med. There are several meds with different side effects. Finding the one without a side effect for your partner is the goal.

You may find help with medication side effects on a epilepsy forum. Try a google search.

I have not seen his medical history, etc., so my agreement with the neurologist is based on the symptoms described and is just my opinion.
