Sleeping too heavily ... but still tired???

Posted by Paulie on February 28, 2000 at 09:03:13:

Hi ... I feel kind of silly asking about this one ... you probably all are saying "You sleep too much?! You J*rk!!!"

I suffer from a problem that I can't seem to find information on anywhere. First, the symptoms:
- I sleep VERY VERY heavily and EXTREMELY difficult to wake (see examples below).
- I never remember my dreams (NEVER!!!)
- I fall asleep quite quickly but cannot seem to wake up regardless of the amount of sleep I have had.
- I always wake feeling completely exhausted regardless of the amount of sleep that I have had (the exhaustion continues throughout the day).
- I am told that I don't move when sleeping ... I have been compared to a dead body or a log.
- Occassionally I am told that I talk in my sleep and I have suffered from insomnia in the past (mostly from poor before sleep habits though). I suffer from no other sleeping disorders - I don't snore, no apnea, I can stay awake when needed ... no narcalepsy.

A little more detail (it's the same whether it is sleep for the night or an afternoon nap):
I seem to immediately fall into a heavy sleep from which it is extremely difficult to wake me (e.g. my wife has come down to find my five year old literally sitting on my head watching TV while I continue to sleep - I have fallen out of bed onto my head hard enough for me to have a big bump and a bruise but not to wake me - I even cut myself once ... bad enough for me to need 3 stitches and again my wife woke me when she felt the blood on the sheets ... it hurt like H*LL too but it didn't wake me up.) Even after a full night's sleep my wife must rake her nuckles across my sternum in order to wake me (like you would to check the responsiveness of an unconcious person - for those with first aid training). I NEVER remember my dreams - sometimes I wonder if I dream at all. I am never fully rested it seems ... I wake up exhausted despite having a full nights sleep and I continue to feel tired throughout the day. This has been happening for nearly as long as I can remember (probably since I was around 10 years old [I'm 28 now]- I remember that I had dreams when I was younger).

I started wondering if I might be missing a stage of sleep as I don't dream but I'm not even sure if this is possible - Does anybody know? ... Can anybody help?

MUCH appreciated.
Paulie
