Frozen and in Pain!!!

I have a sleep problem that I have had for years and years and it has gotten slowly worse. Only maybe once or twice a month it happens, but it is horrible. I will be sleeping calmly and then all of the sudden I feel like I am completely paralyzed. I am afraid, but is it because I can't move? I used to be able to get out of this "state" by simply opening my eyes, and now opening my eyes doesn't work! It is a struggle to get out of it and it hurts. What do I have? What do I do?
