It sounds like you are describing "sleep paralysis". Sleep paralysis is very frustrating, but as far as I know, not dangerous.

If you would like more information, try typing "sleep paralysis" or "awareness during sleep paralysis' into your web browser. There are a lot of sites out there, so don't believe everything you read.
