Your thumb and your lips are two of the areas of your body with the most nerve endings. Therefore sucking your thumb is highly stimulating to your brain, the rhythm along with that stimulation can be calming. There is nothing wrong with doing this, although I suppose it could impact adult teeth (children's teeth can be affected but their adult teeth grow in normally). However, it is way preferable to things like teeth grinding. Just don't let your friends know, and if they do find out and laugh, it really is none of their business anyway. Just tell that it is a way of maintaining your sensory integration, and then let them figure out what that means!:)
