I am 38 years old, and suffer from bruxism. I was at the dentist, and asked if I grind my teeth at night. I said yes, I do; how did you know? By the shape of my teeth - the tops are flat. At that, I ordered a "mouth guard" which will stop the teeth from grinding together but not totally stop the bruxism. For a child with growing teeth and mouth, I am not sure if a mouth guard will work. I think it is best to ask the dentist; this may lead to TMJ problems in the future.
A mouth guard is basically a piece of acrylic that is prefitted to your bottom jaw. It goes over your teeth and is not uncomfortable. If I talk with it in, I have a little lisp.
So check with your dentist first; s/he may know more on this. Good luck! Mary
