Words of Caution re- Klonipin/Clonazepam

Posted by Jim D. on April 25, 2000 at 10:24:53:

Hi everyone ! I visited this web site back before it had a Forum and I was very pleased to see they had added one !! I couldn't sleep last night and I had sleep.net bookmarked so I decided to check it out after not seeing the site for 2 years. Nice surprise !

Regarding Clonazepam though, I'm also a recovering alcoholic/addict (along with my sleep problems !) so I know and have a different view of Clonazepam then some here.

Clonazepam is the drug of choice for alot of sleep conditions, including Arousal Disorder and REM Behavior Disorder (I got both), but it is a drug that is very addictive. I learned the hard way, and did some research into the causes. I AM NOT A M.D., but these are some facts that you can find in any PDR (Physicians Desk Reference).

Clonazepam is very addictive due to the fact that is classified as a quick acting, long lasting benzodiazepine. Believe it or not, it's half life is anywhere from 18 to 50 hours in length ! I'm sure there is people that have taken it that experienced a very prolonged "hang over effect", and that's why. It's also the reason it is real addicting. People feel that it's not working and people tend to take more and more.

Withdrawal from clonazepam can also be very dangerous, and Doctors usually take 2 to 3 weeks tapering people off of it. Anyway, I just wanted to share that with everybody, NOT TO SCARE BUT TO INFORM. When taken according to Dr. instructions it is a very effective drug, and for me it has improved my sleep alot. I still have episodes of acting out dreams, but the frequency has dropped considerably.

I have quite a bit of literature re- Clonazepam, so please feel free to e-mail me if any one wants any !!

Take care and have a great day !!

Jim D.
