I've had this problem for about 6 years now. First remember sleepwalking when I was about 16 - I got up to go to school at 1am, switched the lights on, got dressed etc. Then came to my senses and went back to bed! I knew I'd done it because I'd changed the tuning on my radio, and only got static the next morning.
The terrors started about 6 years ago I think, and I believe that they're almost entirely stress related. Much worse when I have exams etc, or am worried about anything. I think that it's a coping mechanism, but a very annoying one. Caffeine probably doesn't help the situation any either.
I wake my husband up by screaming and sitting up in bed fairly regularly. He's wonderful about it - tells me it's not my fault, which I know, but it's nice to hear it. I have terrors about rats, spiders, being shot in the head, and often think that my husband has an inhuman face. I don't often get out of bed during one of these - although my husband has had to chase me across the room and persuade me that he's not a strange evil being so I'll go back to sleep.
The wierdest one was when I thought the bed was covered in cream of chicken soup - not scary, but a bit annoying for my husband when I insisted on getting up and turning the light on to have a look.
I'd be interested to know if these sleep terrors are known to escalate into sleep walking. Looking at some of the sleep problems on this forum makes me appreciate that I've got it pretty easy, and I can put up with night terrors. What concerns me are the stories about people throwing themselves out of windows in their sleep. Are these experiences an offshoot of night terrors, or a different kettle of fish? As I live on the 6th floor, this worries me.
I'm experiencing a late adolescence if this is a typically adolescent problem - it started when I was 22 and I'm 28 now.
