I wish I could offer you help, but I was looking on this site for help myself. My girlfriend is 23 years old, eats relatively healthy, smokes, and works 3rd shift. My problem is that when I wake her up or wake up with her, half the time she just about bites my head off for no apparent reason at all. It's so frustrating and I can imagine that your loved ones probably feel the same way if they are around you when you wake up. My only suggestion to her was that I read at one point that when it comes to remembering your dreams, if when you are falling asleep, you continuosly say a mantra to yourself to "remember your dreams" it has been shown by some dream studies somewhere that you will be more likely to remember your dreams. I connected this with her condition and try to remind her every night to "be nice and not nasty" when she wakes up. So far it seems to have worked, to some degree. I think she still wakes up excessively cranky, but at the very least, she is not directing it at me.
Also, like the previous post, I used to get snappy in the morning when I was in high school and I would usually take it out on my parents. When I ended up hurting my dad's feelings quite badly, I realized that it had to stop and it did. But this is not to say everyone can do this. I really don't know and really want to.
I hope this helps you and if you do see a sleep therapist (or not), please post a follow-up because your condition and hers sound somewhat similar.
