Night Terrors

Posted by kr on July 24, 2000 at 10:06:01:

I have been suffering from night terrors for my entire life. I only discovered that my experiences were night terrors when I was 25. When I asked my father about them, he said I had been suffering from them since I was 2 years old. At the time, I guess there was very little known about this condition and he did nothing to help me. I haven't been able to find a solution, and the more I upset I get about the terrors, the more I seem to have! My experiences are as follows:

Within an hour of falling asleep, I was up screaming bloody murder (and scare the heck out of my husband!). I normally scream "help me" and my heart is racing and I am terrified. I have a "solution" that we turn the lights on and I usually wake up right away. I am usually pretty belligerent and yell at my husband for waking me! I don't recall these most mornings unless I have had a bad night and can't wake up from the night terror for a long time. I used to only have one a night, and really only once a week/month, but lately I have been experiencing them 2-3 times a night. I feel it is ruining my sleep and my husbands. We are both pretty miserable and I am looking for some help with this. I went to a sleep center and spent the night, but I didn't sleep the whole night (I also have insomnia!). I am seeing a therapist to help me learn to relax, and was on zoloft for 1.5 years. It seemed to help keep the terrors at a minimum, but I am off the zoloft now and the terrors are worse than ever. I would like to not use medication as we are trying to start a family. Does anyone have any advice??
