Eric, You are not alone in this. I have had the same problem with others as you have.
I am 36 years old. I started rocking when I was an infant. I even broke my crib doing it. I continued to rock both in sleep and awake until I was about 11. The reason I stopped is my parents got me a waterbed to stop me from rocking. It did work. I also would rock in a sitting position when I was awake. It provides a soothing effect for me. The only reason I don't rock now is 11+ years of being told to stop. I still have the need to rock and have found that in the last couple of years I have traded the rocking for fast leg movement which happens mostly when I am relaxing and watching TV. I don't even notice I am doing it. I am sure I will have this for the rest of my life. If you have a child who has this need to rock, let them. Explain to them that there are times when it might be in their best interest to try to suppress it but they cannot help it and will only feel more anxious and may even act out. I know for myself, not being able to satisfy the need I get very filled with anxiety. Let me add that I am a "normal" happy person and have had no adverse affects from this. Although I only just discovered Jactatio capitis nocturna and am self diagnosed, (Doctors and such just figure it is nervousness) I am very glad to finally find out that A. I am not alone in this and B. it has a name.

Bob
