Posted by kel on July 29, 2000 at 04:57:48:Hi, I had turbinectomy done about a year ago after suffering from several years of sleep deprivation due to nasal congestion/obstruction. During the two weeks after the operation my sleep was greatly improved. But gradually the condition deteriorated and now I find myself unable to fall asleep when breathing through my nose. I visited several ENT doctors and one of them described my condition as atrophic rhinitus caused by long-term usage of steroid nasal sprays in the past. The turbinate reduction made my nasal passage even drier thereby causing the blocked up feeling in my nose. I've always been a nose-breather and find it very hard to fall asleep breathing through my mouth; in fact, keeping my mouth open at night would mean keeping myself awake all night. Now I sleep very little, even with the help of medications, and can do nothing about it. I feel like a zombie day and night. Has anyone encountered similar problems? It would be great if you could give me some advice. I already use the method of rinsing out my nasal passage with saline everyday (my nose would be so dry and blocked if I don't)before going to bed but it only helps a bit. My problem doesn't seem to be obstructive sleep apnea either as the problem is with the nose and not the throat.
