The only way to know what is causing it is to know what stage of sleep you are in. If you are Slow Wave Sleep (deep sleep) then it could be connected to Sleepwalking or some other parasomnia. If you are in REM Sleep (dreaming) it could be REM Behavior Disorder.
So the way to find out is to have a sleep study. There should be some indication in a sleep study of what is causing it even if you don't have an episode.
If you have a video camera with infra red, you could video yourself each night and see what it looks like.
Generally if it happens early in the night then it leans toward sleepwalking. If it happens in the last third of the night it leans toward a REM disorder.
Best advise is to make the room you sleep in as safe as possible until you find out what is going on and get treatment. Move the night stand and any other sharp objects or any device that could cause harm from the bedroom.
