Problem falling asleep because I stop breathing

Posted by Marcy on December 16, 2000 at 07:52:09:

Hi Folks-
I'm having a strange experience but can't seem to find anything written about it. Sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep (or back to sleep) I find that the moment I drift off, I stop breathing which wakes me up. This can happen for hours. Most of the time I'm waiting to drift off, then when I do...bang, I wake up to breathe. It's different that sleep apnea in that I have not yet gotten to sleep.
If any of you have had this experience, too, please let me know. I'd be especially interested to know if it has a name.
Thanks in advance,
Marcy
