Simmons has recently redesigned their Beautyrest line. My impression is that they have made some great strides.
The key to the Beautyrest are the individually pocketed coils. The individual coils allow the springs to shape to the contours of the body a little better than coils tied to a grid. This can add to the comfort that many people will feel. The drawback to the design is, the individual coils carry a greater weight burden, which may result in getting less overall support.
Choosing individual coils may be a choice of comfort vs. support. This decision becomes far more signicant the heavier a person is: A person over 250 pounds should consider carefully whether the comfort will be more important than the better support that another mattress design might be able to provide.
This is especially true for people who are not "conventionally" proportioned: People with very large thighs, hips or shoulders, but "average" in other areas. Why? Because your natural shape when standing will be mirrored by the extra countouring ability of this type of mattress, and may actually NOT put you in a good posture position for adequate, restful sleep. Sometimes our bodies work against us!
These drawbacks are true whatever the brand of individually pocketed coil mattress. Beautyrest is the best known, but there are many others.
Specifically with the Beautyrest, the changes that they have made seem to dramatically reduce the rate at which the mattresses begin to sag. The original design from 75 years ago -- copied by so many other companies -- tended to have the individual coils compress the padding on the BOTTOM side of the mattress too much, so that body impressions occurred too quickly and too deep. Beautyrest has changed to a block design on the bottom side with (they say) better quality, more durable padding used on the top side. This means that their mattresses no longer need to be flipped over!
The engineering changes look good, but the design being less than a year old, it remains to be seen whether or not they will hold up as well as expected. I think they will.
