Thanks for your comments, Honest Expert.

We also have an inexpensive foam mattress which is now 21 years old. It is on a firm wooden board base and both of us love it (it doesn't wobble when the other person moves). When we travel, we long to get back to it. It now needs replacing and I have checked out what's available.

The original mattress came not from a mattress store, but a specialist rubber and foam store. They still have the same mattress, but have added other foam types, mainly with layers of firmer foam in the centre, and different thicknesses. When I asked about trying them, the shop assistant laid them out on the floor: I liked them all and now have to decide. They are from about $150 to $400. Many people have suggested to me that foam is also less of a collector of allergens, but I can't comment.

However, the mattress store had nothing as simple and I had to put up with a very unpleasant hard sell for mattresses costing $600 to $2000. I agree with Honest Expert that they tried to sell guarantees rather than matresses.

So back to the rubber/foam store.

BTW I don't live in the US, but did for a year recently, and the same type of rubber/foam specialist store existed.

Regards
Baz
