Dear Cue Miller,

A "pillowtop" is a part of a mattress construction that is usually filled with synthetic or natural fibers (as opposed to "memory foam") and is attached to the rest of the mattress as part of the factory construction. It sort of looks like someone sewed a fluffy comforter onto the top of a mattress, a couple of inches back from the edge.

It is designed to do two things. First and foremost, it adds a deeper level of padding to give a cushier feel over the steel springs.

Second -- and only important to a few people -- is the fact that a "pillowtop" tends to be flat (or, flatTER) all the way to the edge of the mattress, rather than sloping downward to the seam connecting the side to the top (Sloping, because the thickness of the padding on a "tight-top" mattress must be pinched to make the seam). This can increase the practical sleeping area by as much as 10%, because you can sleep all the way to the edge ... but few people do!

People who generally buy the "pillowtop" mattresses want a softer feel than a "tight-top" may provide. They are more likely to show body-impressions, though, because the padding is deeper.

Hope this helps.
