Hi Ruby,
The tag that is known as the "law tag" -- as in "Do not remove under penalty of..." fame -- should say "Strobel Manufacturing" on it rather than Supple-Pedic. If it doesn't, it is not a Supple-Pedic. Strobel is the manufacturer and Supple-Pedic is the brand they sell under. The law requires that the manufacturer's name appear, rather than the brand name.
They make 3 thicknesses of pillow: Thin, standard and extra thick, being 3" 4" and 5" thick at the thickest point. Do you know -- or can you measure -- which thickness you have?
Since I know you were hoping to get you mattress through the internet or a catalog, I wonder if you got the pillow this way? I only ask because when I have done internet searches for Supple-Pedic, I usually found that the "stores" selling the pillows only had the standard size, but not the others. To me, this is frustrating: It would be like only carrying one size of shoe! Doesn't the seller understand the importance of what they are selling??? (No, often not!)((Sorry, I'm ranting!))
Most people sleep with the thicker side of the pillow under their neck, whether on the back or on the side. You don't want to have to wake up to turn the pillow around to change from side to back, and back again. The thinner side then cradles the head, which usually has a larger diameter than the neck (some football players excepted!). But there really is no "right" way: the "right" way is the way with which you are most comfortable!
In any case, give the pillow at least a week before you make a final decision. It can take that long to become accustomed, but may prove well worth it in the long run. If after a week it is still not pleasing to sleep on, give the pillow back. They are too expensive to not be right for you! ((Oh! But when they are!...))
Let me know 1) about the thickness and 2) if it doesn't say "Strobel Manufacturing" on the tag. I have a relationship with Strobel (I know the VP of Marketing) and can get them involved if you were sold something other than a Supple-Pedic AS a Supple-Pedic. They will want to know!
Talk with you soon.
