Mattress upgrades great!

Posted by Bill on January 17, 2001 at 22:15:25:

I bought the top of the line Spring Air mattress two years ago. I thought I should go for the best as I have sleep apnea and RLS, so could use anything that might help me sleep. This is the mattress that has the thick quilted padding on top of the regular mattress. It was nice but I soon started getting a sore back from it. There just wasn't enough support. I looked into getting it checked as I thought it was sagging in the middle and that there was a problem with it. I actually moved around on the mattress each night trying spots closer to the edge that were firmer. I still had a bad back each morning no matter what.

I finally got mad and phoned the company which turned out to be reasonably close to where I live. They told me they would check it out and make adjustments for free. I had to rent a truck to get it there and back, but was it ever worth it!

First off - the company warranty work at Restwell in B.C. is done by the owner of the company. I was more than mildly surprised. He questioned me about the mattress and my problems and then proceeded to show me how the mattresses are made, the type of material put in them and why I had a sore back. The mattress was too soft. It was also conforming to the shape of my body, which it is made to do. He then told me his recommendations.

He pulled out a different type of foam that is more expensive than that put in my original mattress. This was labelled M90. He showed me how much more dense it was than what I had and how this would make a much firmer bed. He completely took my mattress apart while I stood watching, and replaced the foam. He also added a grey material that looked like it was crushed flat - this was also for support and to spread out the weight around the mattress. He then put this down on the ground, laid the cover back on it, and had me test it right there. He added another piece of the gray material and I tested it again. It was amazing the difference in the mattress!

Although it was very firm now compared to what I originally had, the extra padding in the quilt top kept it comfortable on the top. The owner told me this was in his opinion, the best way for the mattress to be made. It would be the most comfortable and wouldn't give me any back ache. His opinion was that anyone under 60 should have a very firm mattress and they would not get back ache. After 60 a much softer mattress is needed. After hearing his advice and seeing the product being produced and adjusted right in front of me, I was obviously sold.

I got to stand there and watch while his workers did the same thing to the other side of the mattress with the new foam and pads and then sewed the entire thing up. In all it took about two hours at the factory and was the best personalized service I have ever had in my life. I was very impressed that a customer would get this kind of hands-on treatment. Especially from the owner of the company!

I did get charged $50 for the new material, which was a super deal. The labor was covered under the warranty. It cost me to rent the truck for half a day, but this was all well worth it. The mattress felt very firm the first few nights but not at all uncomfortable. I have now had it for over a week and just love it. This technique of taking a very good mattress and making it absolutely outstanding was a real eye-opener for me. In the past I would have just passed this on as a bad choice on my part and left it at that. I would have tried to get rid of the mattress and tried to find another. However, the service I was given by this company left me very happy about my mattress and very happy about the prospect of having great sleeps on it for the next twenty years.

If you are in a similar situation with a mattress that you aren't very happy with, consider contacting the manufacturer and seeing what they will do for you. You may find that the adjustments that they can make to your mattress will make for a wonderful bed that you thought you might never have. I don't know if the service will be the same as I received, but I can now see that it is possible to make your mattress exactly the way you would like it. You don't have to just take whatever you can find in the stores. These mattresses can be fitted to you personally and without that much hassle.

Happy sleeping!
