EHS is a recognized symptom sometimes encountered by those with isolated sleep paralysis, like myself.

It's happened to me several times and pretty much feels like it sounds. The first couple times I thought I was having a seizure. I was sure something very bad had happened, but afterwards there was never anything actually wrong.

Sometimes it's accompanied by sound halucinations, in my case a rushing or pulsing loud static-like noise leading up to the "explosion".

For more info you can try searching sleep paralysis sites, but my experience is that you won't find much more than "subjects sometimes describe feeling like their head exploded" etc.
- not very helpfull.
