Posted by Aurora on January 31, 2001 at 04:05:57:I have suffered from severely disturbed sleep all my life. As a child my mother would find me walking or asleep on the floor. Once she found me standing at the end of my bed, eyes glazed and speaking a strange language.
I don't sleepwalk now (to my knowledge) but, according to my partner, I frequently sit up bolt upright in bed, usually screaming in absolute terror and sometimes pointing and saying there's something in the room. He says my eyes are open and sometimes I look at him but with a vacant expression. I often speak, although what I say rarely makes sense. He calms me down and I go back to sleep. Sometimes this happens more than once in a night. I never remember. It is only recently that I have learnt that parasomnia is a sleep disorder (I used to think it was just nightmares that I didn't remember in the morning). Obviously, it's not really affecting me (although I do often feel tired) but I feel for my partner who is continually woken up by my bizarre behaviour.
Can I get help for this?
