I agree that it sounds like sleep apnea. Not all sufferers have the classic snore sounds. The important part is that he seems to stop breathing. If OSA it is very likely that he is unaware of a problem. The arousals are rarly noticed by the person with OSA.
I don't see any reason to think it is more significant if the squeaking is on inspiration.
If he also has daytime sleepiness, am headaches or other symptoms, he should be tested.
